System Reliability

Building systems that work reliably even when things go wrong

Reliability as a Feature

Reliability is not something that happens by accident—it must be designed in from the start. At APPNEURAL, we treat reliability as a primary feature, not an afterthought. Systems must continue operating correctly even when components fail, networks partition, or unexpected conditions arise.

We embrace the reality that failures are inevitable. Instead of trying to prevent all failures, we design systems that handle failures gracefully, recover quickly, and learn from incidents to prevent recurrence.

Reliability Pillars

Failure injection
Disaster recovery drills

Reliability Patterns

Circuit Breaker

Prevent cascading failures by stopping requests to failing services. When error rates exceed thresholds, the circuit opens, failing fast rather than overwhelming the failing component.

Bulkhead

Isolate resources to prevent failures in one area from affecting others. Like compartments in a ship, failures are contained to specific sections.

Retry with Exponential Backoff

Handle transient failures through retries with increasing delays. Prevents overwhelming recovering services while providing resilience to temporary issues.

Timeout and Fallback

Set appropriate timeouts and provide fallback behaviors. Systems degrade gracefully rather than hanging indefinitely when dependencies are slow or unavailable.

Incident Management

When incidents occur, our approach focuses on quick mitigation and learning:

Detect Quickly

Comprehensive monitoring and alerting to detect issues before users report them

Respond Immediately

Clear runbooks and on-call procedures to begin mitigation without delay

Communicate Transparently

Keep stakeholders informed throughout incidents with honest status updates

Learn and Improve

Blameless postmortems focused on systemic improvements, not individual fault

Measuring Reliability

We measure reliability through Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Error Budgets:

  • SLOs define target reliability levels based on user needs and business requirements
  • Error Budgets quantify acceptable unreliability, enabling informed risk-taking
  • Continuous Monitoring tracks actual performance against targets
  • Trend Analysis identifies degradation before it becomes critical
